What is the safest way to pay a Chinese supplier? in detail
No payment method guarantees delivery or quality. For a first order, choose terms you can verify and afford: define the goods and the acceptance checks in writing, confirm the payee independently, and compare what the bank or platform protection actually covers before you pay.
- Applies to
- Small and first-time importers deciding how to pay a supplier in China.
Dear friend,
Welcome! This letter sets out what you need to know, plainly and in order.
The main methods
| Method | When you pay | What gets checked | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer in advance (T/T) | Before shipment, all or part | Nothing, unless you arrange an inspection | Delivery; transfers are hard to reverse |
| Letter of credit (L/C) | When the supplier presents documents that match the L/C terms | The bank checks documents only | That the goods match; the bank never sees them. You pay bank fees. |
| Documentary collection (D/P) | When you pay the bank to receive the shipping documents | No bank verification | Quality or performance; banks have limited recourse |
| Platform payment programme | Per that programme's rules | Per that programme's rules | Anything outside its terms, limits and deadlines; read them first |
| Open account | After delivery (agreed credit period) | You see the goods first | Quality, compliance or exchange-rate risk; new buyers are rarely offered it |

There is no single "safest" order. Your real risk depends on how much you pay before you can check the goods, and how hard it is to get it back.
How to lower the risk
- Check the supplier's registration first (see related page).
- Write down the specification and how you will accept the goods: measurements, materials, packaging, a sample to compare against, and who inspects.
- Prefer paying the company you contracted with. Any other payee: verify first (see related page).
- A deposit plus balance is common, but there is no standard split. Pay only what you could afford to lose on a first order.
- Pay the balance after checking against your written criteria. Photos help but are not the same as an on-site or sample inspection.
- Confirm any change of bank details through a contact you verified earlier.
Warning signs
- A price far below everyone else and a demand for full payment up front.
- Payment to a personal account, a third country, or crypto that does not match your contract.
- Pressure to pay outside the platform where you found the supplier.
Still uncertain
- We have not yet checked the current terms of any specific platform programme; check them on the day you pay.
