I sent an Etsy return label and the buyer never used it. Do I still pay?
No, you only pay if it is used. Etsy Help says you are charged when USPS scans the buyer's return package. If the buyer hasn't used it, you can ask them not to; once used, it can't be cancelled or refunded. Return labels are only for buyers with addresses in the 50 US states (not US territories or APO/FPO/DPO) and go by USPS. Sellers shipping from China will usually not be able to use this and should agree returns directly with the buyer.

- Etsy sellers handling a buyer return.
What Etsy says
| Point | Official wording | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Label not used | "You won't pay for the cost of the shipping label until USPS scans the buyer's return package." | Etsy Help: How to purchase a USPS return shipping label (full page read 2026-10-26) |
| Cancel and refund | "You're only charged for a return label when the buyer uses it. If the buyer hasn't used the label yet, you can ask them to not use it. If the buyer already used the label, you can't cancel or refund it." | Same |
| Who can use it | "return labels are only available for buyers with an address within the 50 United States. US territories and APO/FPO/DPO addresses aren't eligible." | Same |
What to do
- Buyer changes their mind: message them and ask them not to use the label; you won't be charged.
- Shipping from China: you will usually not have this option; state the return address and who pays return postage in your shop policy.
- Return postage to China can exceed the item value; work that out before choosing refund-without-return or a shipped return.
Before you pay: checks and red flags
- If someone offers to buy return labels for you with a mark-up, first check whether you can buy them in your own Etsy dashboard.
Unknowns
- Whether non-US sellers can buy return labels in Etsy: the page states the buyer address limit but not the seller's location.
