Is buying from
China worth it for a small business in 2026? in detail
It can be worth it when your realistic total cost, cash tied up and ability to check the goods beat the local alternative. A lower factory price alone is not a reason to import.
- Applies to
- Overseas small-business buyers planning a first or small commercial order from China.
Dear friend,
Welcome! This letter sets out what you need to know, plainly and in order.
Make the decision with one product
Compare the same product, quality, quantity and delivery date from a local wholesaler and a Chinese supplier. A small first order is a test of your process, not proof of future profit.
Use this worksheet before asking for a larger order:
| Item | Local purchase | Direct import |
|---|---|---|
| Product and packaging | Written specification | Same specification |
| Cost to your door | Delivery included or added | Goods, transport, handling and applicable import charges |
| Checks and rework | What is included? | Sample, inspection, testing and possible rework |
| Cash paid before selling | Amount and date | Deposit, balance, freight, taxes and dates |
| Unsold or defective stock | Return rights and likely loss | Agreed remedy, return cost and likely loss |
| Reorder | Available stock and delivery | Confirmed production and delivery plan |
Separate cash needed from cost that stays with the business. For example, whether import VAT can later be recovered depends on the country's rules and your registration and evidence. Until verified, keep the cash provision in your plan.
A useful calculation
As an illustration, suppose goods, shipping, checks and non-recoverable charges total USD 1,000 and you expect 100 saleable units. That is USD 10 per saleable unit before selling, fulfilment, returns and overhead. If only 80 are saleable and none of the cost is recovered, it becomes USD 12.50. These are invented planning figures, not a freight quote or a forecast.
When to wait
Wait if you cannot identify the product, legal seller, payment recipient, import requirements or maximum loss you can afford. Buying locally may be the better first test when demand is uncertain or you need easy returns.
Risk signals
- Savings depend on ignoring duties, testing or defective units.
- A low unit price requires inventory you have no plan to sell.
- You must pay before agreeing what counts as acceptable goods.

This worksheet and the decision above are mouwise's practical analysis, not an official recommendation to import.
Still uncertain
Your country's product rules and taxes, supplier price, demand, exchange rate, financing cost and recoverability of VAT have not been checked.
Next step
Get comparable quotes, then check the product requirements for your destination before committing to samples or stock.
