How do I start finding overseas buyers on Instagram? Who it suits, professional account setup and ads

In forceOfficial textChecked
Answer

Instagram suits visual consumer products (accessories, home goods, pet items, small gifts) and mainly reaches B2C buyers and small retailers; it is a weaker fit for purely industrial inquiries. Sign up as a personal account, then switch to a free professional (business) account in settings; running ads needs a Meta ad account and a payment method. Meta announced Meta Verified for business at US$21.99/month per account (A, 2023 launch price), and in September 2026 introduced Meta One business bundles from US$14.99/month (A); check your own app for current prices. We found no official page for new-advertiser ad credits, so treat anyone selling "credit accounts" with suspicion.

Applies to
Chinese small-parcel exporters who want to show products on Instagram and move overseas buyers to DMs, a website or WhatsApp.

1. Which markets and customers suit Instagram

Monthly usersMeta's CEO announced 3 billion monthly active users on 2025-09-24(C, Mobile Ecosystem Forum)
Ad reachMeta's ad tools showed Instagram ads could reach 1.74 billion people in January 2025(B, DataReportal)
Largest ad audiencesIndia 414M, US 172M, Brazil 141M, Indonesia 103M, Turkey 58.5M, Japan 57.5M, Mexico 48.8M, UK 33.4M, Germany 31.3M(B, same)
Brand research62.8% of Instagram users use it to research brands (Q2 2025), the highest share among platforms(B, DataReportal)

Ad reach is not the same as unique users and may include duplicates.

Good fit: B2C buyers, small online shops and boutiques in the US, UK, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and the Gulf, for light products that photograph well. Poor fit: technical industrial goods sold through trade shows or sourcing platforms (see the LinkedIn page).

2. How to register (personal, business, ad account)

  1. Create a personal account with a phone number or email.
  2. Switch to a professional account in settings and pick Business or Creator (A, Instagram Help Center).
  3. Add category, contact details and website; you may link a Facebook Page.
  4. For ads, boost posts from the app or create a Meta ad account in Ads Manager. Instagram states you can run ads from a professional profile (A, Instagram Help).

Prepare: phone number, email, a payment method. Meta may ask for business verification (typically a business license); follow the prompts in the app.

Mainland China companies: we did not find an official direct-onboarding page for small mainland businesses. Meta has a category of officially authorized ad partners that can be checked on Meta's own pages; this page names none. The platform is not directly accessible in mainland China; use it only by lawful means. We do not provide access methods.

3. Day-to-day operation

  • Posting frequency: we found no official Instagram recommendation. Our own judgment: 3 to 5 posts or short videos a week; consistency beats volume.
  • Content: clear product photos, packaging and shipping, materials and sizes; one main link in the bio.
  • DMs: reply the same day; use quick replies if your account offers them.
  • Security: turn on two-factor authentication, give team members only the access they need, never share passwords, ignore "copyright violation" or "account will be disabled" links.
  • Appeals: use "Request review" in the app and the Help Center (A).

4. Ads

MethodNotes
Boost a postOne-tap promotion in the app; good for first tests
Ads ManagerChoose an objective (traffic, engagement, leads, sales), audience and placements; can run on Instagram and Facebook together
BillingAuction-based; daily budgets and billing thresholds are shown in your ad account

Minimum budget: we could not read the official help page with exact amounts (Meta's business help pages block automated reading). Use the minimum shown when you create the ad; ignore third-party numbers.

Review rules: ads must follow Meta's advertising standards; alcohol, tobacco, drugs, adult content and weight-loss products are restricted or banned. Check the policy before launch.

Tracking: install the Meta Pixel and Conversions API for website results; for DM leads choose a click-to-message objective.

6. What results to expect

There is no reliable public average for inquiries per follower. Test yourself:

  1. Run 4 weeks, 3 posts a week, one trackable link in the bio.
  2. Track profile visits, DMs and qualified inquiries.
  3. No qualified inquiry in 4 weeks: fix photos and bio first, then consider ads.
  4. Test ads for 1 to 2 weeks with a small budget, changing one thing at a time; stop if cost per inquiry exceeds what your margin allows.

7. Red flags

  • Anyone charging upfront to open "credit-funded ad accounts", promising rebates or guaranteed approval.
  • Requests for your password or login codes, or to "borrow" your account for ads.
  • Services selling followers, likes, comments or accounts: against platform rules and likely to get you banned; we neither provide nor recommend them.
  • "Buyers" in DMs asking for deposits, "customs fees", or sending outside login links.
  • Contacts who push you off-platform, take a sample fee, then vanish.

Unknowns

  • Exact minimum daily budget and billing thresholds for Meta ads: not verified.
  • Current prices of each Meta Verified business plan, and how it relates to Meta One: not stated in the official articles.
  • An official onboarding channel for mainland China businesses: not found.
  • New-advertiser ad credits: no official page found.
  • Official posting-frequency advice: not found.
  • A first-party Meta page for the 3 billion figure: only media reports found (C).
