Visiting
China to source: can I use
WeChat and pay with Weixin Pay or
Alipay with my foreign card? in detail
WeChat's help centre says you can sign up with a foreign mobile number, and that a foreign bank card can be added to Weixin Pay (WeChat Pay) for everyday purchases in mainland
China; with a foreign card on Weixin Pay, red packets and money transfers are not supported. Weixin Pay's guidance describes no fee below RMB 200 and a 3% fee above that; check the current payment screen. Alipay's official service charge rules (version of 23 Aug 2025) say a foreign card payment of RMB 200 or less has no service charge, and above RMB 200 the charge is 3%. These are consumer payment tools: do not assume they can settle a supplier's deposit or order.
- Applies to
- Overseas buyers travelling to mainland China for fairs, factory visits or markets.

What this means on a sourcing trip
- Try setup before you travel, if the app permits. Verification or activation may still need further steps.
- Use eligible merchant payments for supported everyday purchases such as taxis, meals and hotels. Whether a payment works depends on the merchant, your card and your verification.
- Supplier payments are different. Foreign-card merchant purchases and person-to-person transfers are different things. Do not assume this consumer payment setup can settle a commercial supplier deposit or order; confirm the merchant, transaction type, limits and the payment method in your contract. Our advice is to pay a supplier to the company account named in the contract; see how to pay a Chinese supplier safely.
Still uncertain
- The Weixin Pay page does not say what happens at exactly RMB 200; check the payment screen. Your card issuer may also charge its own fees.
- We did not find an official Alipay page stating per-payment, monthly or yearly limits for foreign cards; check the app.
- Undated agreements on Alipay's site still describe "Tour Pass", a Bank of Shanghai prepaid card for foreign passport holders with a Chinese visa; they say fees and limits are shown on the service page. An agreement being online does not prove new applications are open today.
- This page is general information, not financial advice.
